Minimal Requirements and Suggestions for Where to Find Attire

We know that for some people, choosing and wearing a costume is a highlight of the event, while for others, it’s a drag and effort/time/money not wanted to be spent.

Here we thought we would give you some information on what we’re looking for guests to wear as a minimal requirement for a costume – just “in costume” enough that you don’t look modern or stand out, and then we’ll go over suggestions for where to find attire that really fits our theme.

General Info

Our year is 1927 – generally, that’s a bit after the “flapper” era, into the art deco era -the “Great Gatsby” look, a bit less flapper and fringe and more shiny streamlined appearance – although some people would have worn what they already have in the closet for fun affairs so flapper outfits would be ok.  The bulk of what you find on Amazon.com is likely to be earlier “flapper/roaring 20s” costumes, but this is fine if it’s what you want to wear – we expect a good number of guests to be dressed from the earlier 20s because of it.  Our venue is a “speakeasy” so some people might not dress up as fancy if they’re going to a place that’s explicitly illegal.  It’s ok to dress up as the common man/woman.

For men, we’re looking for guests to dress up as gangsters, or in a tux, or more the common man – trousers and suspenders and no tie.  It’s also ok to dress as a World War I veteran.  Hats were very common.  Maybe you’re an Italian immigrant, maybe you’re an Irish immigrant, maybe you’re neither.  Maybe you’re a carpenter who would like to get a drink on a Saturday night, or maybe you’re a gangster, who was roughing up the other boys when you were 10.

For women, we’re looking for guests to be mostly in dresses, although some pants were worn by young ladies who really wanted to stand out as being independant.  Maybe you’re a gangster’s wife, maybe you’re a gangster yourself.  Maybe you’re a clerk at the bank or a secretary. Maybe you’re a housewife who is bored being at home all the time, but Saturday night you’re the Queen.

Minimum Requirements

Men – Brown or Black loafer shoes; black, brown, or grey slacks; and a white shirt.

Women – Flats shoes and a dress.

Suggestions and Pointers

For men, If you want to take the minimum requirements and spice it up a bit, add a tie, add a vest, or instead of a tie and vest, add suspenders.  Add a hat.

For women, if you want to take the minimum requirements and spice it up a bit, add a hat or nicer shoes.

You can search for 20s attire for either men or women in Amazon or AliExpress and get results. Remember that ordering from AliExpress you need to allow up to 8 weeks for delivery unless it tells you otherwise. They do have 15 day shipping on some things.
